The Columbia River Caspian Tern Project has been using Double-crested Cormorant decoys at multiple sites since 2004.  Beginning in 2005, they have been used to investigate the efficiency of Passive Integrated Transponder tags (pit-tags).  The study is being done in collaboration with fish biologists.  The small, microchip pit-tags are inserted in to juvenile salmon that are then consumed by fish eating birds like cormorants.  The tags are excreted in the colony areas.  Decoys are being used to create colony areas on platforms where the tags are then recovered at the end of the breeding season.
