Outreach Education Assistant

Outreach Education Assistants can spend a handful of days on a seabird island and work as a naturalist at the visitor center and on boat tours.

Description: Join the Seabird Institute as an Outreach Education Assistant and work as an Audubon naturalist aboard puffin watching trips and interpret the history of the Seabird Institute at the Project Puffin Visitor Center. Training for the position will involve spending up to 5 days on a remote seabird nesting island. This time will serve as hands-on orientation to National Audubon Society's Seabird Institute and learn how to identify common seabirds. Upon return to the mainland, there will be a training period for the visitor center and boat tour naturalist duties. The Seabird Institute cooperates with two different private boat tour operators who offer seabird and puffin-viewing tours to the public. The education assistant will provide a brief history of the Seabird Institute and help identify seabirds and marine mammals seen on the tour boats.  In addition, the Outreach Education Assistant will work at the Project Puffin Visitor Center where they will interpret the history of the Seabird Institute, as well as develop and lead educational programs.  

Season:  Three positions are available. The start date for all 3 positions is the beginning of May.  The end date for 1 position is August 31st. The 2nd position ends September 30th, and the last positions ends October 31st.

Qualifications: Individuals must be seaworthy! Possessing or pursuing a B.S. or B.A. in conservation education, interpretation, or biology is helpful. Alternatively, an upper level undergraduate with related experience, or someone enrolled in a related field of study would be considered. Career goals should include a position in conservation education or interpretation. Applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Compensation: $19/hr. at 35 hrs/wk., plus room and board and worker's compensation insurance coverage. During the island experience, a personal tent is recommended but can be supplied. A private room with shared kitchen and bath at the headquarters of the Seabird Institute in Bremen, ME is required for the remainder of the time. Mileage will be paid for business use of a personal vehicle if required.
