Wednesday Night Lecture Series

The Project Puffin Visitor Center, open May through December, offers lectures in the summer months.

JUNE

June 28: Join Dr. Kress and Emily as they discuss the origin story of Project Puffin and the revolutionary methods that made the project a success for wildlife restoration. Using audio clips from the Maine Conversation podcast, Dr. Kress will tell the Project Puffin story (on its 50th anniversary this year!) in a new and novel way.

JULY

July 5: Join us for Sips & Seabirds. Audubon experts will guide participants during this decoy painting event to learn how scientific methods and techniques developed by Project Puffin helped Maine seabirds and birds around the world. Tickets are on sale now!

July 12: Celeste Flahaven, the Seabird Institute’s Communications & Outreach Assistant, will discuss how live cameras are an innovative, non-invasive tool for seabird research. This presentation will include exciting footage from Audubon’s explore.org live cameras. The explore.org live cameras act as a method of community engagement and help foster citizen science initiatives for nature lovers all around the world!

July 19: Steve Kress, founder of Project Puffin, will present the story of how teams of young naturalists helped to restore puffins and other seabirds. The work of Project Puffin also inspired groups from around the world to help other seabirds return to their native homes.

July 26: Amanda Leeman, Hog Island Naturalist, will be discussing soil science, what soil is made of, why it's important, and what we can do to protect it.

AUGUST

August 2: Don Reimer will be discussing members of the corvid family, which includes ravens, crows and jays; some of Maine's most intelligent and resourceful birds. Reimer will present a photo discussion of this intriguing family, focusing on their unique traits, habits and behaviors that make them so successful.

August 9: Susan Beebe, a local artist, will be at the center to assist and guide participants in a hands of, full sensory art activity. This activity is suitable for all ages and all supplies will be provided, including photos of local birds. A small fee of $5/participant is required.

August 16: Don Lyons, Director of Conservation Science for Audubon’s Seabird Institute, will provide an update on the development of wind energy in the Gulf of Maine and the efforts of the Seabird Institute to minimize impacts on Maine’s seabirds. Nesting puffins, terns, and other seabird species have been tracked in recent years to better understand the areas of the Gulf that are most important.

August 23: Celeste Flahaven, the Seabird Institute’s Communications & Outreach Assistant, will discuss how live cameras are an innovative, non-invasive tool for seabird research. This presentation will include exciting footage from Audubon’s explore.org live cameras. The explore.org live cameras act as a method of community engagement and help foster citizen science initiatives for nature lovers all around the world!
