JULY 2024
- July 2: Brushstrokes for Birds – There is a rich history between science and art, and in this program participants will engage in seabird conservation through art. All ages are invited to create a painting on a 5x5 inch canvas under the theme of Maine seabirds and their habitat. These paintings will be collected and put on display where they will be auctioned off to raise money for seabird conservation here in Maine. All art supplies will be available for participants. All ages.
- July 9: Lights Out – Birds, especially migrating birds, depend on night travel, and things like light pollution and large skyscrapers greatly affect this migration. This program will teach the importance of keeping lights off along with other ways we can support migrating birds. Ages 8+
- July 16: Make and Take – Create a birdfeeder out of common household items and watch birds from your backyard. Through this creative exploration of recycling participants will explore how to reuse single-use plastics, like a water bottle, to create a backyard bird feeder. We will also learn other ways humans can help birds (window-stickers, cats indoors, lights out at night, etc.). They will also be introduced to some of the bird species that may use their new backyard bird feeder creation! Empty plastic drink bottles will be available or bring your won. Ages 5+
- July 23: Bird Identification – Bird identification can seem daunting but join us and learn how pros identify birds by color and field marks. Learn what field markers are and use them to identify various seabird species. Ages 9+
- July 30: Decomposition Mission – When leaves fall from trees, where do they go? What happens to trees when they fall in the forest? Through hands-on activity, participants will learn about the role decomposers play in an ecosystem! Ages 7+
